I have been visiting Mainland China at ballygunge since last 15-20 years. As far as I know, this was the first location. the quality of food have been at the same high standard since commencement. In normal days there is Ala carte but on special occassions , they offer Buffet lunch and dinner. I had buffet couple of times and its a great experience with ample choice of tastiest items. We last went in December 2025 and tasted some new food items and cocktails. it is better to book in advance to avoid long waiting times since they are always busy. I prefer the downstair area as it feels quieter and spacious there compared to upstairs. Mainland China still remains my first choice for Chinese food in Kolkata. Chinatown restaurants in Tangra are also very good but they have a different "gharana" of taste compared to Mainland China.
Dining at Mainland China after researching several YouTube reviews beforehand, shortlisted some of their most recommended dishes - I must say, the choices did not disappoint overall. Here’s what we ordered: 1. Sriracha Chicken Dumpling (MC) – ₹525 2. Crispy Prawn Cheung Fun (MC) – ₹595 3. Blue Pea & Spicy Asparagus Dumplings (MC) – ₹525 4. Truffle Edamame Jasmine Fried Rice with Chicken (MC) – ₹595 5. Spicy Clay Pot Chicken (MC) – ₹675 6. Pan-Fried Noodles with Prawn Toppings – ₹635 The Sriracha Chicken Dumplings were absolutely lovely - juicy, well-seasoned, and perfectly balanced with a mild heat that didn’t overpower the filling. The Crispy Prawn Cheung Fun was another standout, with soft rice rolls wrapped around crunchy prawns, creating a beautiful contrast of textures. The Blue Pea & Spicy Asparagus Dumplings looked stunning visually, thanks to their vibrant colour, but taste-wise they felt slightly underwhelming compared to the others. The Truffle Edamame Jasmine Fried Rice with Chicken offered a completely different vibe from regular fried rice. The edamame added freshness and texture, and the truffle aroma gave it a subtle richness - definitely something unique and worth trying. The Spicy Clay Pot Chicken was comforting and flavourful, with well-cooked chicken in a rich, aromatic sauce. Finally, the Pan-Fried Noodles with Prawn Toppings were satisfying, with crispy noodles and generously sized prawns. The total bill came to ₹3728 for three people, which may feel reasonable for the quality and presentation. Overall, a well-thought-out meal backed by research - and Mainland China largely lived up to its reputation.
An absolute delight for lovers of Asian breakfast! I tried almost every item on the menu, and each dish stood out with its authentic flavors and excellent preparation. From the comforting fish ball soup and delicate dim sums to the perfectly seasoned wonton noodles and chilli chicken, everything tasted fresh and satisfying. The congee station with condiments was a highlight, offering a warm, customizable start to the day. The variety is impressive—well-balanced with soups, starters, mains, and even unique desserts like honey noodles and sweet bean buns. Fresh juices and jasmine tea complemented the meal beautifully.
