We have travelled to various cities around India and stayed in many hotels. Coming from London the expectation is very high. From the moment we got out of our cab into the hotel to the time we got back into the cab to the airport the way we were treated was beyond amazing. We had come for 6 nights to celebrate our honeymoon and a birthday and the staff went far and beyond to make our stay memorable. The first day we checked in Sanjib dealt with the few requests I had asked for. He dealt with us with upmost respect. Our booking had free breakfast and the service was impeccable from all the staff. To name a few Shruti, Koel, Ishika and Sushila would always be looking after us and would know where we wanted to sit and what we wanted to order! I had a special request for one of the mornings at breakfast for a cake and a nice set up for my partners birthday. Nasir and Koel put together a lovely table with a cake also. They really made breakfast incredibly special. The wonderful chef Kavitha would come out and greet us and took the time to have a conversation with us and she made us a special dish after we informed her we had just gotten married. It was an incredibly thoughtful gesture. The breakfast had a wide spread of local dishes as well as continental options. The hot food was exquisite. It would be one of the things I looked forward too. One of the evenings we ate at Sounargaon which is a restaurant in The Taj. Without the help of Christine we wouldn't have experienced one of the best prawn dishes I have ever tasted. After a couple of days I had requested a room change and in came Abhijeet who works at the front desk to the rescue. He spent a couple of hours to make sure I was able to get that room. It really changed the experience of the whole stay. We had Rahul from housekeeping to thank for always making sure our room was clean and we had a stock of earl grey teas! I would recommend to anyone who visits Kolkata to come stay at the Taj, it is one of the best stays I have ever had in my entire life.

The property feels like an oasis of calm away from Kolkata’s bustle. The lobby is grand yet inviting, with modern art, marble floors, and subtle Bengali touches. Rooms Not so spacious and but well-maintained, the rooms feature classic wood furnishings, plush beds, and large windows offering garden or city views. The bathrooms are clean but a bit dated in some wings. Service This is where Taj truly shines. Staff are attentive, polite, and proactive—from the doorman to housekeeping. They remember your preferences and go the extra mile. However, during peak check‑in times, the front desk can feel slow. Dining For us the dinner and breakfast came as a package deal both were served at Cal27 which was absolutely fantastic. We were 5 pax staying in rooms and we absolutely loved the experience. Amenities The pool area is lush and relaxing, the gym is well‑equipped. Minor Downsides • Some rooms and corridors show signs of age; a renovation is overdue in certain areas. • Wi‑Fi, though free, can be inconsistent in far corners of the property. Verdict Taj Bengal remains one of Kolkata’s finest luxury hotels, especially for travellers who value impeccable service and a peaceful environment. If you’re looking for modern ultra‑luxury, consider newer properties, but for old‑world charm and genuine hospitality, this is hard to beat. Recommended for: Business travellers, families, and anyone wanting a quintessential Taj experience.

We recently stayed at Taj Bengal and would like to share our experience. A big shout-out to Chef Chandan in Cal27 for preparing a delicious chicken curry on special request. He truly went the extra mile to ensure we enjoyed our main course to the fullest. Thank you as well to Chef Kavitha for her helpful insights on muesli — much appreciated. The food at the lounge access was excellent, and compliments to all the chefs involved for maintaining such quality. We would also like to thank the staff present on the 5th floor for their attentive service and support during our stay. While the majority of the staff at Cal 27 were responsive and courteous, we did experience some inconsistency in service. A few staff members appeared to knowingly ignore requests, and we faced similar inconsistent responses from the reception team when contacting them by phone. We chose to stay at Taj because of its renowned hospitality, and we believe this standard should never be compromised. Overall, we appreciate the efforts of many team members who made our stay pleasant, and we hope the minor service gaps can be addressed to make the experience even better.
